Collage

Grandad Squirrell

I used an old WW1 portrait photo as the starting point for this collage of my Grandfather and his life.

Kaleidoscope

Inspired by the Dada film by Fernand Leger, ‘Ballet Mecanique’ (1924).  I block printed fragments and scraps of the images taken from the original film. These fragments represent the turmoil I feel about the concept of female self-image in a misogynist culture. It conjures a messy kaleidoscope of images and emotions.

Abstract Wall

The same project led me to create a collage to reflect the depth, colours, layers and textures on the walls full of peeling posters which leave their own abstract mark on the city.

The writing’s on the wall

Inspired by the layers of decomposing posters and graffiti around the backstreets and alleyways in Manchester city centre. The graffiti presented are modern or archaic words for women. The painting expresses how the residues of the past remain in some male attitudes towards women.
